چکیده

s Liver glycogen content and liver glycogen synthesis are lowered in diabetes mellitus due to lack of functioning insulin. Many enzymes of glycogen metabolism as well as glucose metabolism are sulfhydryl in nature and are affected by changes in cellular thiol-disulfide ratio. Certain low molecular weight thiols can influence glucose uptake and utilization in fat cells and in muscle cells. A study was undertaken to establish the effect of thiopropanol ( 3-mercapto 1 propanol) on glycogen breakdown in isolated alloxan diabetic liver. The results indicate that thiopropanol influences glycogen breakdown, lactic acid production in alloxan diabetic liver which may be attributed to increased activity of hexokinase in thiopropanol-exposed-alloxan

Berberine ameliorates hyperglycemia in alloxan-induced diabetic C57BL/6 mice through activation of Akt signaling pathway.

Recently, it is implicated that the abnormality of Akt signaling pathway is involved in the diabetic pathology. Previous studies have demonstrated that berberine could decrease blood glucose by elevating liver glycogen synthesis. However, the underlying mechanism is still unclear. In the present study, we investigated the effects of berberine on fasting blood glucose, liver glycogen, Akt, Glyco...

Effects of Turnera ulmifolia (Linn.) Leaves on Blood Glucose Level in Normal and Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rats

The methanolic extract of leaves of Turnera ulmifolia L was evaluated for its effect on blood glucose in alloxan-induced diabetic and euglycemic rats. The extract were administered at three doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, p.o. Glibenclamide (10 mg/kg, p.o.) was used as standard for control group. In euglycemic rat, extract were administered at three doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, p.o. Extr...

The effects of ethanol extract of Berberis vulgaris fruit on histopathological changes and biochemical markers of the liver damage in diabetic rats

Objective(s): Various studies have shown that the diabetes is associated with liver failure. The objective of this study was determining the effects of Berberis vulgaris fruit on histopathological and biochemical markers of liver in diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 60 male Wistar rats weighing 200-250 g with free access to water and ad libitum were randomly divi...

A dynamic role of liver glycogen in alloxan diabetic rats.

The effect of alloxan diabetes on mobilization of the liver glycogen was followed in male rats given one injection of alloxan (200mg/kg). The serum glucose showed a typical triphasic curve, reaching sustained hyperglycemia 24hr after injection. The insulin levels of serum and pancreatic tissue extract remained within normal limits for the first 24hr. The marked decrease in insulin levels from b...
